-- Instructions and Basic Info for NoblesNet97 -- Mac and IBM, 3/97 --
(First Class client is freely distributable, so you can copy this disk and this file to multiple computers if desired)

Informative Graphic that will help most people (even Chicago Bulls fans) with your Noblesnet installation!

How to install
-- On your floppy disk is ONE file called NN97MAC.sea if on a Mac or NN97IBM.exe if on an IBM
-- By double-clicking on this file using Mac or Windows skills, your first step is to "UNSTUFF" or "UNZIP" this one file into a folder on your hard drive... note that some users have reported better results by copying the ONE file to your hard drive first!
-- Navigate to the place on your hard drive where you wish to install NoblesNet 3.5, our version of First Class 3.5, the new, improved software from Softarc in Canada; once you have saved the folder (this takes a few minutes), then eject the disk-- you do not need it any more unless you need to start again or install on a second computer
( If these instructions don’t mean enough to you, then "find someone younger than you and get help" which is the slogan we live by in the Computer Department at Nobles -- -- if you can’t connect, we have a handful of students able to take phone support calls; please call the Admissions Office if you don’t have this list and need it)

How to connect your modem
-- Usually, you connect the modem to the wall with phone wire; if the modem has 2 plugs labelled LINE and PHONE, use the one that says LINE to connect to the wall and the one called PHONE to connect to your voice phone; if the modem is external, there might be an electric plug (if you are a beginner, this means that you will be able to use your voice phone or modem when you like, but not both at the same time)

What the installer does and what to do next
-- The installer UNSTUFFS or UNZIPS and creates a folder (subdirectory) on your hard drive called NNET97 if on an IBM or NoblesNet97 "Lite" if on a Mac
-- Within this folder, you will find the application software called FirstClass® Client 3.5 or FCClient.exe; open this file (menu choice under FILE should say OPEN SETTINGS) and then navigate to the SETTINGS subfolder, in which you should find a file called NNET97.FC regardless of whether you use a Mac or IBM (one of the many wonderful things about First Class 3.5 is that the same exact settings file works for both Mac and IBM users)
-- To launch the software, you need to load the NNET97.FC settings file from within First Class
-- when you get the LOG-IN Dialog Box, click on the button that says SETUP; check the phone number or change to 320-1314 or 17813201314 if you live far from Nobles
-- up top on the SETUP screen is a box that should say Modem.FCP
-- click on the button that says SETUP; this takes you to the Modem.FCP screen
-- check or change the modem type (using the triangle next to Modem), trying to find an exact match for your SPECIFIC MODEM; if you cannot find your exact modem, try changing to Hayes Compatible or Generic or HAYS_960.MDM
-- make sure that the bar next to the word "Phone" is accurate (Pulse or Tone)
-- once the settings are all correct, click on "Save" in the bottom right and then "Save" again on the next window ...now it should work!

Other tips and what if you don’t succeed?
-- if you have call waiting, you must disable it or any incoming call will knock you off the modem; put *70 in front of the phone number under SETUP, e.g. *70,320-1314
-- if you can’t connect, maybe you have chosen the wrong modem type; this is very common and requires trial and error -- check carefully your modem type and look for matches.
-- if you can’t connect, maybe you need to change the PORT from COM1 to COM2 to COM3 (IBM) or from MODEM to PRINTER (Mac)
-- if you are set up with TCP at home and you know what this means, then you can TCP in to NoblesNet by changing the set-up and using our IP ADDRESS of 207.31.250.18 or our equivalent name of bbs.noblesnet.org for this same IP Address. To facilitate this, we have given you a small settings file called NNET97TCP.FC on your Mac or IBM disks; it uses the TCP-IP.FCP setting of First Class 3.5.

What about other features of NoblesNet 97?
-- once you are on NoblesNet, you can check the conference called NoblesNet 97 Updates located within Public Conferences for up to date info and files
-- once you are on NoblesNet, you can get help by sending a NoblesNet note to Help Computer Dept
-- once you are on NoblesNet, you can download a better modem file from either NoblesNet97 or the NoblesNet File Library also located within Public Conferences.
-- once you are on NoblesNet, you can upgrade to the latest version of the NoblesNet settings file which include Justin Levy’s color graphic instead of the black and white that we have packaged into the one disk version of NoblesNet
-- once you are on NoblesNet, you can download the dictionaries for English, French or Spanish and put one or more into the TOOLS FOLDER of First Class; these 3 dictionaries are a wonderful new feature of First Class 3.5
-- NoblesNet 97 lets you view JPEG files, not just PICT files
-- For Mac users who wish to make aliases of NoblesNet97 and put onto desktop, be warned that we (and Softarc) have been frustrated by this quirk!
-- once you are on NoblesNet, you can get info about how to WORK OFFLINE, which is useful for students with limited time or adults from afar; this means that you can be reading and sending mail without being on the phone; once done, your system connects to NoblesNet and makes the transfer (please note that working offline is not available to REMOTE USERS, i.e. trustees, parents, new students). Be patient with this newest feature, since we in the computer department are still learning it from those younger than us!

Three-two-oh, one-three-one-four...call up NoblesNet and see what’s in store! 320-1314
