QUESTION 2) How do you find chat rooms for special interests, i.e. service learning? (Angela)

QUESTION 3 ...Can we talk more about two spaces between sentences? (Mark, Jeri)

answer: absolutely!

Mark Holt-sc: I say 2 spaces after a sentence not one. We need to differeniate between words & sentences. 2 not 1! Who's with me???

QUESTION 4 ... Can we talk more about SAVE vs SAVE AS (Michele)

answer: yes, we will go over this more throughly ... here are some useful statements to reinforce from Monday

When a document has NOT YET BEEN SAVED, then SAVE vs SAVE AS are the same thing and each brings up the SAME dialog box allowing you to deal with the RULE OF THREE (file name, location, file folder)

Once a document has been saved (hopefully within the first 5 minutes of working on it), then SAVE means SAVE IT BACK in the same location, folder, file name (rule of three) while SAVE AS means change the file name the folder or the location

QUESTION 5 ... Places to Eat?

Da Nico ... Italian ... reservations required says Tom ... Phone: 212-343-1212 ... 164 Mulberry St, æ New Yorkæ10013 ... little italy in Lower Manhattan (says Tom Palermo) ... Da Nico Italian, Pizza 164 Mulberry St, New York, 10013 ... one review: ate there yesterday with 5 others. Manager was very kind in accomodating and waiters were excellent. Food was authentic and plentiful. How could anyone complain about cost!!! 6 people who had so much food that all unable to finish. Total bill- 72.00 with tip. We'll be back

outdoor space is definitely great. Never had calamari so tender before. Ordered one of the specials: Spinach ravioli with mushroom sauce, it was to die for. Zeppolis on the house for dessert. Although, my friend ordered some House Zinfindel and she had to talk herself into feeling tipsy.

or go one block east onto Mott Street ... Golden Palace ... 21 E Broadway

Joe Dowling says on 84/83, East Side of York, Hunan Cottage

Steve Bergen-fs: you might want to go to www.menupages.com

Maryvonne Mamelok-sc: go to Miss Saigon on 3rd ave.

Cindy Bolin-sc: the blue water grill is a great restaurant

Steve Bergen-fs: excellent Mexican Restaurant on Second Avenue ... 1712 2nd Ave ... Cilantro ... review of Cilantro from the web .. The margaritas alone (hello, fresh watermelon!) are reason enough to patronize this tex-mex joint! Their food is also delicious and reasonably priced...

Rob Peterson-sc: Good evening one and all! I hope you have had a good day and that you learned that the Red Sox are a lost cause and that if you really knew better you would cheer loudly for the Yankees.

Rob Peterson-sc: Broadway...any suggestions for a good play?

Steve Bergen-fs: did I remind you that Lynne and I are hosting a Summercore Thursday pre-graduation party Thursday night at 6:33???

Jessica Creach-sc: any sushi recommendations?

Peter Hertzberg-sc: Lenge on the west side or east; and Sachi on the east side. Lenge is on 77th and Columbus on the West Side; Sachi is 95th and Madison, we think.

Shermina Ladak-fs: nobu is good for sushi but pricey and Haru is good too

Shana - a little downtown, but definitely affordable - #31on St. Mark's Place, I think its called Zen Sushi. There is a big fish above the place. Sushi is 50% off all the time. Don't get the eel. Get to St. Marks Place by taking the #6 subway to Astor Place.

one answer: on south side of 86th street several stores next to and over from Pizzeria Uno's ... Tokubei 86 ... Japanese, Sushi 314 E 86th St ... one review? local gem: I've lived on 89th & 3rd for 3 years, passed this place a thousand times, and never tried it until my boyfriend took me there a couple of weeks ago. It is now my favorite Japanese/sushi place in the area! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the service was excellent, everyone has a smile on, and the food was phenomenal! It's not the cheapest place, but it's worth every penny.

Jessica Bell-sc: I'd like some Indian!

Peter Hertzberg-sc: Re: Indian. Mumtaz on third avenue and 85th; also, downtown, 28th and Lex, Pongal, really good veggie Indian--and cheap.

QUESTION 7: Tables/Columns

How do you make tables and/or columns in HTML? Maryvonne

Answer: let me show you (or someone else will) in person Maryvonne ... I am thrilled that within 24 hours you are asking this level of question ... first person (beyond a teenager) who has done this after being introduced to HTML at the beginner level within 24 hours ... bonjour .. bonsois ... etienne ... well done, Maryvonne ... we did it (wed morning) on YOUR webpage at http://gatornet.chapin.edu/ ~maryvonne

QUESTION 8: OS in the future

How long until the operating systems will be able to read any file without an extension? Gail

Answer: I really have no idea ... speculation might be 3-5 years because it makes so much sense ... but making sense and being implemented by the makers of the OS are not the same thing ... Apple.corp in the mid90's first implemented PC Exchange into the Mac OS so that Macs as of 1995 could read PC disks ... Microsoft has not done the same on the PC, i.e. incorporating Conversions Plus into the PC OS so that all PCs could read Mac disks without buying that $50 software ... so 3-5 years is a reasonable guess which is of course a lifetime for computers and will still be BEFORE the red sox win their sixth world series ;-)

QUESTION 9: VC Info

What VC System do you have? What does your VC setup cost? hardware? maintenance? monthly? Gail

Answer: I have a wonderful contact (below)for doing any purchasing nationwide who will help you with advice as well. We at Chapin currently have a very old system from 1998 that works but not the PolyCom one that Scott thought we had (that is being repaired or worse) ... you should budget 6-7K for initial purchase and install and then perhaps 1-2K per year for ISDN phone charges, although David will recommend (as did Scott) that you buy a system that does both ISDN and IP VC ... contact person ... QUESTION 9: Word to Web

I do a lot of my work in Word. How do I bring it to a web page, with links to go to another lesson or exercise. (Maryvonne)

Answer: you can save each Word document as an HTML document without doing any coding and then via whatever system you use, you can post the web page. You can also use features of Word to link web page A to web page B or C or D. Lynne will show you more in person, Maryvonne!

QUESTION 10: What is Instant Messaging? (Angela)

Answer: it is a little bit like the chatting we did Monday at 5:30pm, except people can chat with others far away ... Shana will tell you more in person, Angela!

QUESTION 11: Typing (Matt) What are the typing standards used at Chapin (wpm) from grades 1-5?

Answer: we push typing in our middle school which is grades 4-7 ... here are several links for reading more ... we ask each student to practice 30 minutes per week and use a wonderful on-line web-based system called Typing Pal ... we have different levels for each grade from 4 to 7 ... grade 3 girls get an orientation in the second semester but the real work begins in grade 4

Typing Pal Update (July 2004) As CIO of The Chapin School, I discovered Typing Pal in the Summer of 2003 and am in love with this software which provides individual students with accounts that are based on-line. The advantages of their being able to do their typing practice from any web based machine are huge. I am not a fan of wasting or consuming much time in our computer classes with having the students practice typing. Most of our classes meet just once a week. We get quality tech help from the Typing Pal people and they sell us cross platform CDs that we can distribute and use with our students who have limited, buggy or no web access from home. Yes, I would like to see more depth to the exercises and more exercises, since some of our students finish all of them. But that is a minor area for improvement compared to the outstanding (and I believe unique) marketing niche that Typing Pal has in terms of being a web based typing program. Our students in grades 4-7 can work on their own as part of their weekly computer homework (30 minutes per week) using any school based computer or any home computer. This is a huge advantage and I know of no other typing software company that offers anything like this! Parents by the way, rave about their children's usage of this program! And from a consumer point of view, the sales people at the typing pal company (demarque.com) have been first rate in responding to our needs and are a pleasure to do business with! Steve Bergen CIO, The Chapin School (100 East End Avenue, New York, NY 10028) co-director, The "Summercore" Teaching Company (http://www.summercore.com) e-mail: bergen@chapin.edu click here to see our typing page at Chapin which we are very proud of ... we emphasize typing in all four grades (4-7) and incorporate Typing Pal into overall strategy which also includes our own home-made but VERY EFFECTIVE typing test ... http://gatornet.chapin.edu/typing.html

QUESTION 12: Photos (Betsy) How do you e-mail photos, e.g. IPhoto, especially if the recipient does not receive a HUGE picture?

Answer: IPhoto (or other programs) lets you EXPORT the pictures to small or large sizes. Choose JPEG and LOW QUALITY to keep the file size small. Do not use original size of pictures, but change the size when you export to no more than 6 inches (432 pixels) ... glad to show you in person how this works ... you NEVER want to e-mail someone 5-10 megabytes, but generally UNDER 1 meg!

QUESTION 13: VideoConferencing (Matt) Can I get the name and e-mail address for Scott, the first guy we VC-ed with on Tuesday?

Answer: see the link above ... http://gatornet.chapin.edu/ merrick/

QUESTION 14: E-mail ... my school is pretty much set on the current (outlook) e-mail setup. I 'd like to talk a little bit aobut how to integrate first class in addition to it (for collaboration). Matt

Answer: don't go down that road, Matt ... if they are happy with the system, keep it and put your energy into other directions (projectors, pioneers, smart boards, faculty training). If First Class is not the e-mail system you don't want it as a second system. Too much overhead and wear and tear on you!

"Dianne Connor-vis" writes: Dear Steve, I printed pictures out last night and they are posted on the wall. I like three best. So as you can see, we all have differing opinions. As it should be. Art is very personal therefore the difference of opinion. I forget which format I used to print them. They all came out approximately 4 in. by 6 in. or thereabouts. And by the time they finished printing the color cartridge said we were low on ink. I commend all the others for their efforts. And I'm glad I found a way to print them. Wish I could remember which of the format I used.

Whoops ... controversy from Judge Colleen who has contradicted Judge Dianne ... I did not get this until late Friday evening

Dear Steve, Dianne and I have come to a conflict of opinions so is the American way, so I think that we can deal with it! My picks are different than hers so here are my picks

Number 1 is "Colorful sea-life" by Shermina and Jessica - I don't know about the threatening black octopus because I probably would never have gone into the water with that ominous creature lurking around.

Number 2 .. Angela and Joan's entry of "seaside frolic" was almost painterly when I looked at the way that it was put on the paper.

Number 3 ... I also liked "what a catch" by Cindy and Michelle - it seems as though all the fish have swallowed a hook - I was never that lucky when I went fishing which is probably why I never got hooked on fishing as a hobby I also wanted to comment on the size of the fish versus the size of the boat! Bye bye boat!

Honorable mention: - "here's looking at you, kid" the names are too small for me to read but I'm sure you know what picture I mean - it's the big orange fish that looks a bit like "whatever it was - Nemo"
