Notes for webpages group

Graphics must not float. Go to Format, go to Picture, click on Position tab, turn off "float over text."

Ellie’s advice: when you want to use a graphic, insert table.

Table: Go to Table menu, select Table. (This really helps hold information in place.) Set rows and columns, click OK. To make a table just for a picture, you can make one cell (one row, one column) and click in that. Make the cell however big you want the picture to be before you insert it. (You can get rid of the table borders under Table AutoFormat for a cleaner look.)

Now you can insert a picture (say, from file). Click the table/position where you want the graphic. Go to Insert Picture, From File (or wherever) and retrieve your image, click Insert, and presto! You have a picture.

Don’t forget to SAVE as you work! And don’t forget to save as a WORD document.

To see how it’s going to look as a webpage, go to View Online Layout. You can work on the page while it’s in Online Layout. Save it as HTML.

How to use a table: Ellie used a curriculum type example with subject sections in a table – remember? (Math section with picture and then bullet web links, etc.)

Links within a document (anchor links):

To go straight to a section (instead of having to scroll down): highlight your destination, then go to Insert Bookmark and immediately type in destination name. (Make sure you name it properly and don’t erase a previous bookmark). Highlight starting text. Then, go to Insert Hyperlink – go to Named Location in File and click Select button. Your bookmarks will pop up, then highlight the one you want to select and click OK. Then test to make sure you did it right.

How to grab pictures online:

A great website to get picture from is Ditto.com. All Ditto.com pictures are free. (The more specific you are in your search, the better your results will be.) To save the picture (on Mac), click and hold on the picture – do NOT select "copy image" or you’ll get a crappy picture. Select "download image to disk," save in the correct folder and click on save. Then insert the picture (see above for instructions).

Background color:

Under Format, Background, click on whatever color/pattern you want. For one webpage you can only have one background.
