Students define the American dream and examine how it has changed by looking through the vast collection of rare print documents, early motion pictures, rare prints and photographs, and/or the library's recorded sound collection.
Grade Level: Elementary, Middle School, High School

This is a straight forward, visually beautiful lesson on the desert that can easily be completed by students of varying ability levels. Students are asked to created hyperstudio projects and a diaromma as final projects.

WebQuest : The 1960's Museum
http://school.discovery.com/schrockguide/museum/webquest.html
This simple web quest has students research events during the sixties and create a “room” of a virtual museum with links to web pages about the events. A sample “museum” on the year 1962 is available for viewing.

Little Rock 9, Integration 0?
http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/BHM/little_rock/
This WebQuest, designed by Tom March for Pacific Bell Education prompts students to think about the nine African-American students who, back in 1957, chose to attend an all-white high school in Little Rock, Arkansas and thus forced Americans to question segregated schools. This webquest is about the world we lThis activity takes the WebQuest strategy one step father by using interactive Transformation Builders to facilitate higher order thinking. One caution, some of the reading and activities may be difficult for middle school students.
A WebQuest on Cultural Diversity For Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grade Students
http://coe.west.asu.edu/students/stennille/ST3/webquest.html
This simple webquest has students work in groups to explore Native American and Hispanic culture through websites, books and interviews. The students keep a journal as they research, and create Hyperstudio projects and a virtual museum as culminating projects. The webquest includes rubrics and questions for self-evaluation. One major problem with this webquest is that it is worded in a way that sounds like Native American culture is one culture and Hispanic culture is one culture, instead of each being many different and overlapping cultures. The teacher may want to ask students to study one specific culture from each group.
