From one of the judges, Colleen Powers

Hello--this is my second try at sending you a message to your bergens@isb.be address, so I hope that it works this time! Also, you might want to emphasize that I'm not typing, I've dictated all of these trial and error messages via DragonDictate.

It is nice to hear from you, I'll get in touch with Diane and we'll cook up an introduction! It'll be nice to know what the level that your students are at so we'll know what to expect (sort of) but I'm sure that they're every bit as creative as the ones in last year's class! From me, creativity and command of the tools are most important. Secondly, use of colors and subject-matter are almost equally important. Please stress the importance that we don't believe in "bad art" (at least I don't). It is most important to me that they are willing to take a chance and experiment with it! Have fun!

Pink Card Questions (and some answers)

What should I do if my laptop should crash. This has happened to colleagues who have the same machine (Angela)?
When a laptop crashes, it might be a hardware problem or a software problem. In most cases, you need to find someone to lean on. The person will try starting up (booting up) off a start-up CD or start-up Floppy. Sometimes, Norton Utilities can be used to recover a computer, if the problem is software.

What might be the best solution for dealing with portfolios of 100 students, each with 1-10 color graphics (Outi)?
I am thinking that web pages perhaps by Front Page, organized by child might give you the combination of easy access, use of descriptive words and aesthetic look to the portfoilios that could be both on line and printable

What is a macro and when would I want to use one (Anne C)?
A macro is a shortcut for for doing a repetitious task, e.g. turning text into bold 24 point, centered, typing a special character such as é ... most people do not need the power of macros, but if you remember that a "macro is a shortcut for a repetitious task" you will find SOME ocassion where someone gives you a technoquickie that involves creating a macro! Steve

If you were going on vacation, would you take a digitial camera or a regular camera (Anne C)?
I think that taking a regular camera and turning the film into digital files and standard prints gives you the best flexibility. The web organization at www.ofoto.com wil send envelopes for developing your film free if you post on line with them, but they charge for prints. Other local stores will turn your film from your standard camera into floppy disks or CD Roms AND give you prints for relatively low costs. Start asking around. Steve

What can you tell me, or where can I fnid out about computers for visually impaired, technically blind people (Liz S)?
I actually have a contact whom I met on the video conference listserv that I would be glad to e-introduce to you. Aside from that, I don't have any other resources, but I bet that major organizations for visually impaired people have many links on their web pages.

Can I get a better idea of the LOOKUP command that we covered too briefly in the Varsity Spreadsheet group, especially the $$ symbol (Anne C, Anne H-D)?
Absolutely. The basic command was

=LOOKUP(B4,H33:H40,I33:I40)
this means lookup cell B4 in the "tax table" from H33 to I40
the problem is that when you copy this formula, you need a way
to indicate that the "tax table" is to be referenced in an
absolute way without changing any cells
therefore, we need to use the $ version of the commmand
putting the $ in front of each of 8 spots in
=LOOKUP(B4,H33:H40,I33:I40)
so that it becomes
=LOOKUP(B4,$H$33:$H$40,$I$33:$I$40)

Can I see a see a sample spreadsheet that subtracts the lowest score automatically or adjusts the total automatically if a student is absent from a test (Anne H-D)?
Absolutely. Come to MY booth at the carnival! Steve

Can we see the web pages of Jim Barry, the artist from California and Martin Bridge, the artist from Massachusetts? Can we find out if ISB has one computer with Photoshop (Outi and Jean)?
I need help from someone in finding the computer on campus with Photoshop. Martin Bridge's web pages are on nobilis.nobles.edu and I will give you the login and password for getting in. Jim Barry's web pages are at ... Curriculum Links either the Art Link or the Digital Art Link ... look for Cal Tech which is one of the places where he teaches!

Can I get a copy of the ticket you handed out last night in downtown Brussels advertising the Summercore Carnival (anonymous)?
Absolutely. It should be ready by noon. On Friday of this week, we are going to go with Dorothy Blake before lunch to listen to COOL MUSIC at 11:50 AM and we will be giving out dozens of FREE TICKETS to our carnival which starts right after lunch!
