Can I get a quick lesson on Telnet and FTP (Christian)?
Absolutely. To telnet somewhere, you typically need a telnet address. Under the start menu, you choose RUN and then type perhaps TELNET BBS.NOBLES.EDU to access the bulletin board that I run at Nobles. To FTP, you typically make sure you have a free FTP client your PC, such as WSFTP or perhaps a trial version of CUTE FTP. We can practice FTP-ing into the web site that Bryan created for us on day two at www.fortunecity.com using an e-mail address of summercore4@isb.be and a password of won*****. Steve

Can I get some help on purchasing a laptop for my son (Rosemary)?
Absolutely. Come join several of us at lunch, today, Wednesday.

Can I see how to upload digital pictures to the Ofoto web site at www.ofoto.com (Veronica)?
AYes. The account at www.ofoto.com that has an e-mail address of summercore@nobles.edu and a password of ab** has pictures on it already. Why not take pictures today of the student helpers and upload those pictures. Brian can show you how to move the pictures from the floppy disk to your account on www.ofoto.com by using the easy interface where you specify how many pictures to upload and then navigate and point to each one using browse. Steve

What place do computers have in a kindergarten classroom? How would you suggest they should be organized? Do you think that kindergarten children should wear rings with binary numbers? (Angela)
Several great questions here. It is always important to have that philosophy comes before program. It seems that what "might be" considered important at the kindergarten level is for ALL kids to be given the implicit sense that the computer is THEIR tool so that kids with less financial resources get plenty of experience and so that girls use the computer corner as much as boys. Additionally, since too many of the computer people in the world are male, it is important for kids to see role models of female teachers using computers as important tools. Beyond that, there is the wonderful quote in the green book from Louisa Birch that she claims the computer provides her with better insights into the cognitive and problem-solving processes of children than anything else she has seen in 25 years of teaching Kindergarten. Finally, getting familiar with the keyboard is important at a young age since it leads to more typing facility in later years. Steve

How can I put an e-mail address into a powerpoint presentation or web page -- like a hyperlink for a URL (Marian)?
Here is the sample code. It is easy to answer this question by finding a web page with the E-MAIL feature implemented and then choosing VIEW SOURCE. Steve

Example: I wish I could send E-Mail: Larry Bird before 33 more years go by!

A HREF=mailto:"Larry_Bird@nobles.edu" in brackets
then
Larry Bird
then
brackets A brackets

How can I print out my addresses showing display name and e-mail address in Outlook (Anonymous)?
We will show you in person. Steve

How can I print out bookmarks or favorites showing name and URL (Anonymous)?
These bookmarks can be saved and printed. We will show you in person. Steve

Can you recommend any anti-virus software (Jane)?
Several of the most popular ones are Norton, McAfee and Virex. You can actually download and buy on-line! Steve

Sometimes you need to scroll across to get all of a web page on the monitor. Is there a way to adjust this situation (Jane)?
Typically, this happens with large graphics. I do not believe there is any workaround. Just use the horizontal scroll bar. Steve

I have a French speaking student who would like to get a French magazine. Anyone have an extra one to give away? (Steve)?

I have a French speaking friend with multiple sclerosis at the Boston Home who would like to penpal with someone here and correspond en francais. Anyone interested? If so, I will be glad to e-introduce vous. (Steve)
