The love song 'Maria' begins with a constant repetition of D sharp, capturing perfectly Tony's numb bewilderment at his love for Maria. An acceleration of rhythm and a key change let the melody explode. The insistent cha-cha from 'The Dance At The Gym' returns, this time over yet another Latin American rhythm - a bass line tango. 'Maria' is the first song in the show in which the audience is really allowed to relax and enjoy the number.
Bernstein began the lyrics to this song himself but handed over the project to Sondheim with the words: 'It's difficult to make a strong love song and avoid corn'. Sondheim was determined to achieve what Bernstein found so difficult by not allowing Tony to sing 'I love you'. It took him five months of intermittent effort.
