How many spam messages in my e-mail did I get?
And how many false positives should I have seen?
The answer, as you'll glean
Is in the quarantine
The answer is in the quarantine

How many times will John Neiers say?
If you train the barracuda well, there's no false positives to be seen
Yes, he's quite keen and I'm not being mean
The answer, as you'll glean
Is in the quarantine
The answer is in the quarantine

How many barracudas are there in the world?
And how many are programmed like the Chapin machine?
From Nick Sidoti and Bob Cashman I will glean
The answer's yet to be seen
But we know it is in the quarantine

Tune is loosely based on Blowing In The Wind by Bobby D
less than 20 seconds of his harmonica playing is used
"up to 10 percent of the work but no more than 30 seconds of the music or lyrics from an individual musical work."http://www.umuc.edu/library/copy.shtml
other source? http://www.utsystem.edu/OGC/IntellectualProperty/ccmcguid.htm
the recording of Blowin' In The Wind Used is from No Direction Home (live)
The picture of the barracuda used is from http://images.fws.gov/ which contains a large collecton of public domain still photos (U.S. Fish and Wildlife's online digital media library)

And the answer is ...

Hi Tim and Chris. I recently sold a Barracuda solution to a private school in NYC, The Chapin School. The customer now wants to know how many Barracuda units are installed worldwide and if you can you estimate what percentage of your install base uses indivdual quarantines? Basically, he's trying to determine whether or not to implement the individual quarantines. Thanks, Nick

Nick ... our customer base is upwards of 40,000 worldwide at this point and growing very rapidly. I would say that 80% of that base uses the Quarantined in boxes.  This takes a great deal of workload off of the IT person who will handle the box.

At Chapin, we have been using individual quarantines with Barracuda and First Class since October 2006 ... each user -- student and faculty member has an individual quarantine and gets weekly messages of "what's in his/her quarantine" with options to delete, whitelist or allow the e-mail to go through to First Class ... we have whitelisted colleges and the e-mail addresses of all parents so as to minimize hassles for people ... in the opinion of almost everyone at Chapin (tech people, administrators, faculty, students) the quarantine system helps tremendously for both real and psychological reasons ... it helps for real reasons since it keeps the spam away from people ... it helps for psychological reasons since it gives all users a sense of "empowerment" and a feeling of being able to control (and understand) the spam phenenomenon ... Steve Bergen (April 2007)

p.s. our spam installing company, promenet, told us the vast majority of their customers do NOT use the quarantine option because their tech people don't want to add to their workload ... we therefore reached out to the barracudanetworks.com company and were pleased to find out out that such a high percentage of their customers -- 80% -- go the quarantine route
