Watergate was one of the greatest scandals in American political history. In 1972, President Richard Nixon ordered a break in of the Democratic National Committee offices so that he would have more information about the Democratic strategy for the upcoming presidential election. What ensued was a massive cover-up by both Nixon and his Cabinet. The Watergate scandal led to the eventual Congressional investigation led by Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski. As the threat of impeachment became incresingly clearer, Nixon saw it woulod be in his best interest to resign much like Cabinet members Charles Colson, John Dean, H.R. Haldeman and John Mitchell had done before him. In August of 1974, Nixon became the first President of the United States to resign, only to later be pardoned by Gerald Ford.
