Jospeph Smith Jr, one of the founders of the Mormon faith, was murdered by rioters during the days of Mormon poligamy. He and his brother took their Mormon followers to Illinois where the Smith's met their demise at the hands of angry rioters. Brigham Young held a less controversial position, optional poligamy, and was accepted by all Mormons to be the true leader. He took the Mormons away from the religious oppression of the eastern United States, travelling westward to Utah. In Utah the Mormons developed a thriving culture which is still strong today.
