Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the thirty-second President of the United States of America. As an only child, Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, New York in 1882. He graduated from Harvard in the class of 1904 and continued on to graduate from Columbia Law College. In 1905 FDR married Eleanor Roosevelt who helped him through his polio in 1921 which took away the use of his legs from then on. This Democratic candidate saw Nazi Germany as a huge threat to the United States' national security and tried to send many supplies overseas to help the other countries fighting against Hitler. Once he became president FDR's role in the war heightened. After finishing up his time as the Governor of New York, FDR went on to run for President. In 1932 he defeated Herbert Hoover during a great depression when one quarter of the work force was not employed. Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin's distant kinsman was a large influence in the president's life. Franklin Roosevelt was a very important leader in the battle of Pearl Harbor. He did a very effective job as the commander in chief during this time in history. Although he created a very large wartime debt, he was still looked upon highly by the American people. Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945. He was remembered as an excellent president and a gallant war hero by the people of the United States.
