The Puritans never wanted to separate from the Anglican Church. That was the main difference between them and the pilgrims. They were nonconformists and considered other religions too complex. They wanted to purify the English Church so that it would be the same as in the time of Christ. They purified it by stripping away popery. Popery involves ceremonies and practices they deem unnecessary.
