The Pilgrims came over to Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. The reasons for leaving were they wanted to separate from the Anglican Church. When they arrived in Plymouth, they were faced with the harsh realization of winter. They had no food and many got sick and died that first winter. Within the next couple of years they befriended an Indian tribe. These Indian people taught them how to hunt and farm, and gave them the basic skills to survive on their own. The Pilgrims soon started their own colony and before long, had their own government in place. Their churches were mostly separatist, but no one was forced to practice any specific religion.
