In 1970 after the U.S.'s invasion of Cambodia on April 30, Nixon announced that 150,000 more troops would be drafted in the next three years. In response to Nixon, many students from colleges and universities all over the country gathered in protest. At kent State the protest turned violent as students set fire to the ROTC building on campus. Ohio dispatched 900 National Guard troops to the campus.On May 4, 28 guards opened fire on a crowd killing four and wounding nine. After the incident, almost 500 colleges were shut down.
