Patton was one of the most colorful American generals of World War II. His dramatic manner, outspoken comments on military and political affairs, physical roughness, and reckless behavior won him both applause and criticism. His toughness and rough manner and speech earned him the nickname "old blood and guts."

Patton was born on November 11, 1885, in San Gabriel, California. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1909. An excellent athlete, he actually placed fifth in the 1912 Olympic pentathlon.

Patton was a brilliant military commander. In November of 1942 he led the Western Task Force ashore in Morocco in the Allied invasion of North Africa. In January of 1944, Patton became commander of the Third Army for the French campaign. When the First Army broke through the Nazi resistance, Patton's Third Army rushed into battle and broke the German resistance in what was probably the greatest battle of World War II.

General Patton was known for his great military mind, but was also recognized by his flamboyance. Here's a little story on Patton:
When he was inspecting army hospitals, he slapped two soldiers who were suffering from battle neurosis. Patton explained that he would not have cowards in his army. However he was forced to apologize to the soldiers by President Eisenhower and was also halted from involving himself in the war for several months after.

Despite his rigidity, Patton was a great military leader and had the medals and commendations to show for it. He has a total of 45 medals from 12 different countries. He is one of the most important and memorable generals ever to be apart of the United States.
