Rachel Carson
Rachel Louise Carson - 1907-1964. Lived in Maryland.
Rachel Carson's main contribution to society was, among other books, Silent Spring, about the dangers of pesticides -specifically DDT - and other harmful materials. She wrote about what humans are doing to the earth and how we can improve the way we treat it. Silent Spring was published in 1962.
Interesting Facts:
- Rachel Carson loved the ocean ever since she was a small child. She became a marine biologist.
- She worked and studied in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, the Pennsylvania College for Women, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Bureau ( then called the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries ).
- Books she wrote included Under the Sea World, The Edge of the Sea, The Sea Around Us, Silent Spring, and others.
- In college she did not like writing and even gave up English for biology, but she ended up an award-winning non-fiction author.
- She said once, "Man is a part of nature, and his war against nature is...a war against himself."
