Zora Neale Hurston was born in Etonvill, FL on January 7, 1981, and died in 1960. She was an African American author. She encouraged the study of anthropology and folklore worldwide. Anthropologist, folkorist,novelist-her work in a range of fields contributed greatly to the preservation of African American folk.
Some interesting facts about Zora Neale Hurston.
- She went to Bernard college and studied antrhopolgy.
- She was the first African American woman to graduate from college.
- Afterwards she taught at Carolina University.
- She was awarded a Guggenhiem fellowship to pursue her writing.
- She wrote seven full lenght novels and over one hunded other publications including articles, plays, and short stories. Their Eyes Were Watching God is considered her finest novel. Her 1942 autobiography was her last major work.
- Her intense focus on the lives of African American woman has been of egual or greater impact.
