Geneva is a historic city in southwestern Switzerland which is located on the extreme southwestern shore of Lake Geneva in the canton of Geneva, of which it is currently the capital. It is the third largest city in Switzerland, to Zurich, and Bern, and it is known for the numerous international and humanitarian organizations which have their headquarters there. It served as the headquarters for the the League of Nations, an international peace-keeping organization, from 1920 t0 1945, and is now the European headquarters for the United Nations. Others are the International Labor Organization, the Red Cross, and the World Council of Churches. The site of all these headquarters is the Palace of Nations. These many organizations provide many jobs for the city residents and guest workers.

Tourism is one of the major means of income for Geneva. There are many landmarks in this fine, ancient city. One of the most famous ones is St. Peters Cathedral which was built in the 900Ős. Others include the University of Geneva, which was founded as a college by the Protestant Reformation leader, John Calvin, in 1559, and the town hall, constructed in the 1500Ős. The Rhone River also flows through the city, splitting it into two sections. The old section lies south of the river. It offers most of the historical sites. The newer section, north of the Rhone, features large hotels and the Palace of Nations.

Over the centuries, Geneva has been occupied by many different religions and races. The Romans were the first to establish a settlement on the site of what is now Geneva around 50 B.C. During the early Middle Ages, Kings of the region of Burgundy lived in Geneva. In the 1000Ős it became a part of the Holy Roman Empire. Then under the leadership of John Calvin, Protestantism took over the city in the 1500Ős. The Protestants remained in control until 1815 when the Geneva canton joined the Swiss Confederation, a union of Swiss cantons. Because of these cultural occupations Geneva expresses a rich culture unlike any other city.
