FACTS

-In Switzerland, the people are able to vote on things like taxes, nuclear powerplants, rail-systems, counties, international treaties, etc.

    - Lately in Switzerland, less than the majority of the people have voted, and that has caused problems.

    - The Swiss Federation has 26 smaller units which they call "Kantone" and "Halb-Kantone", which basically means states. Each state has its own government, its own laws, its own court, etc. Sometimes these counties are divided into "Bezirke" (county).

    - The Swiss Federation embodies two parliamentary chambers. Once is the "Nationalrat" which represents the population of the "Kantone". The other is the "Staenderat" which represents the "Kantone" itself.

    - Switzerland does not have a main president like the US does, but it has 7 ministers (elected by the parliament). Every year, though, one of the seven ministers is elected 'First among equals', and he is then called president.

    - Most think that the election of the 'First amoung equals' is pretty boring since it is the same set of people each year.
