The Zamboni

Frank Zamboni conceptualized and later created the Zamboni in Southern California. Reports on the date of the ZamboniÕs creation are conflicting, yet most agree that the first Zamboni was made in the 1940Õs. The first Zamboni ran on gasoline and was made as a quicker, more efficient way to produce Òan attractive sheet of ice.Ó Recently, Zambonis have been able to run on electricity. In addition, there are many models of Zambonis, such as the ÒModel 700 Zamboni¨ Ice Resurfacer.Ó Zambonis are now an accepted part of ice hockey, figure skating, and other events that require a fresh sheet of ice.

It is interesting to notice that some memorabilia stores have begun to carry ÒminiÓ plastic Zambonis, less than 10Óx10Ó. Painted on their sides in vibrant colors are the names of local or popular teams.

How does the Zamboni work? As a hockey player, I have always taken the 10-15 minute resurfacing for granted. However, it is not as simple as it looks. The first step is to scrape, shave, and chop up the ice. ÒA horizontal screw gathers the shavingsÓ and Òa vertical screw propels them into the snow tankÓ that is located in the ZamboniÕs large front. Next, warm water, stored in a tank, smoothes the ice by way of Òa squeegee like conditioner.Ó Dirty water is Òvacuumed, filtered, and returned to the tank.Ó To finish up the resurfacing, a towel spreads the hot water to the ice surface. It is important to remember that these are not separate steps. Most Zambonis follow the same route that is designed to cover the whole ice in the least amount of time.

The Zamboni is an important innovation to athletes and recreational skaters alike and it has Òa really cool name.Ó

Cloud of whimsy
wispy, white clouds pass
they are mischievous, whimsy
will they stop? I muse

Spud
brown heart, earthÕs child rests
a spud underground, he waits
I like potatoes

Cinnamon and Sugar
flavor from our earth
curled up, brown and enticing
ginger, nutmeg; spices
The Grand Plains
rolling green meadows
open, inviting you in
you lie, drift away
Wind breaker
wind to rip your face
to put ripples in trench coats
resetting nature

Zamboni
ice Resurfacer
alone, cold, here disheveled
bump up, off the ice

What comes upÉ
leaves flutter in wind
flying up into the air
not wanting descent
Yellow
yellow
mustard, Munster
drenching a hot pretzel
engulfed, delicious aroma
eaten

The Pillow
pillow
soft, cozy, kind
invites your weary head
ahÉhead meets pillow, sleep occurs
snoring
