The football field is a field 100 yards in length, with two end zones of 10 yards each, and is 52.5 yards in width. It is played with two teams with a maximum of 11 players on the field at a time, and the two teams try to advance a brown, oblong ball down the field and across the opponent's goal line, which is worth 6 points, and then the team can try to get the ball over the end zone again, worth another 2 points, or kick the ball from 20 yards away through a set of posts, giving them 1. They can also try and kick the ball through the posts for 3 points. The game of football was invented by Walter Camp (April 17, 1859-March 14, 1925). He was a halfback on the Yale College football team. He coached the Yale team in 1888, and was a member of the Intercollegiate Football rules committee for 48 years. In 1889, he and Casper Whitney chose the first All-American team. He also decided the 11 man per team on the field at a time, and limiting a team to 4 downs in which to get 10 yards. Camp and his colleagues decided upon with the basic idea for which the modern professional game is based. Football was basically invented during the late 1880Ős and the early 1890Ős. It was invented for collegiate play at the time, but the National Football League came into existence in 1920 and has since made millions of dollars at home and abroad. by Tim Kistner Bibliography "Encyclopedia Brittanica" New York 1968 |
