Ten facts about the ice cream cone
- The ice cream cone was invented by Ernest Hamwi.
- It was invented in 1904.
- It was invented in Saint Louis Missouri.
- It was invented at the WorldÕs Fair.
- Hamwi was a Syrian vendor.
- He was selling Zalabia, a Persian wafer-thin waffle.
- Near him, there was an ice cream vendor who ran out of dishes, so Hamwi wrapped one of his waffles around some ice cream.
- The ice cream cone was first called the WorldÕs Fair Cornucopia.
- Italo Marchiony patented an invention much like the ice cream cone in 1903.
- The difference between MarchionyÕs cone and HamwiÕs cone is that the former is made of pastry, and the latter is made of waffle, and is what we think of as an ice cream cone today
All of my facts came from the book Mistakes That Worked by Charlotte Foltz Jones. It was published in 1991 in New York City, by Doubleday Dell Publishing Group Inc.
I asked my penpal, Roni Schalman what she knew about the ice cream cone and what she thought about e-mail.
Here are the replies I got.
Hi! I am your CP1 penpal! I am in 7th grade at Nobles. In Cp, we have to learn about an invention and make a web page on it. My invention is the ice cream cone, which was invented by Ernest Hamwi in 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair. If you know any facts about the ice cream cone, I would be happy to hear them and use them in my web page. If you want to see my web page (when it's posted) or my picture on the internet, you can go to the nobles home page (www.noblesweb.org), click on student projects galore, then click cp1 spring 97 and then on my name. Do you like using e-mail? Do you go on line often? How often do you check your e-mail? How long have you been using e-mail?
-Rachel
Hi Rachel, I'm very excited to have a pen pal. Right now I don't have any
facts to share with you about ice cream cones but I will be doing research for
you and checking with my friends. I love, love, love ice cream and my favorite
way to eat it is in an ice cream cone. I don't like waffle cones or the plain
kind. I love the sugar cones. I am new to e-mail in my home but before I got
my new computer I worked at a job where I used e-mail all of the time. I try
to check my mail once-a-day if I can. Let me know when your web page is ready
and keep in touch. I'll let you know when I have stuff to share. Good luck
with your project. take care, Roni
I would defenately agree about sugar cones being the best. What is your favorite kind of ice cream?
Also, do you think that e-mail is useful? What do you think about the world wide web. Mr. Bergen wants us to quote our penpal. Do you mind being quoted?
-Rachel
My all-time favorite ice cream flavor since childhood has been butter pecan
but recently I have been also enjoying frozen yogurt (when I'm not in the mood
for an ice cream cone!) vanilla with big chunks of heath bar mixed in with it.
No, I don't mind being quoted. E-mail and the world wide web have opened up a
whole new world of communication. They have connected people with others from
all over the world that would never have had the opportunity to share ideas,
cultures, and friendships, otherwise. The www is a new way to have fun while
learning about so many different things. I'm just learning but I can see how
easy it is to get "hooked".
Let me know if you have any favorite sites.
One of my favorites is
located at www.christusrex.org/www1/sistine/0-Tour.html
(click here to link to it)
... It has beautiful pictures of the sistine chapel in Rome. I went there many years ago
and it is really wonderful to "visit" it again in my own home!
Unfortanately, I don't get to spend much time surfing the web when it's not for a school project. I do see more than I would like to of the Where in the USA is Cynthia San Fransisco (A weather web site) and the antarctia web site. I would not recomend either of these. I will check out the one about the Roman chapel. I love old and new Roman architecture (I did a short report about it for Latin). Also, I know a junior in high school who draws incredibly detailed Roman cities. They are really neat. The pictures take him months to draw, but his work payed off. A little while ago he won a national award for drawing!

Hi Rachel-
I thought it would be fun to submit a People's Choice Opinion Poll for your
project. 38 adults were interviewed and asked to admit what their favorite
type of ice cream cone is. The choices were plain/pastry, sugar, or waffle.
The "adults" (this really brought out the fine child in each one of them
indicating that simple things in life such as ice cream can bring great
enjoyment!!) responded as follows:
Plain = 9 1/2
Sugar = 12 1/2
Waffle = 16 THE WINNER!!!
The reason that there is a split vote for plain and sugar is that one very
particular person shared "for dark flavored ice creams (chocolate, etc) I must
have a plain cone and for light flavored ice creams (vanilla, etc) I choose
sugar cones" There is a little gourmet in each of us!
Another ice cream expert shared "I appreciate stores that serve their cones in
the wax coated paper wrappers so that ice cream won't drip on me if there is a
leak in the bottom".
This was fun for all that participated and for me as well. Good luck with your
web page. I'll try to look for it.

Thank you very much! Those ice cream cone facts are really cool! I am trying to make a link to your favorite web site from my web page, but I might not be able to.

I asked my other penpal, Kim Ferrete, about the ice cream cone and e-mail also.
HereÕs what she said
Hi
You are my penpal for CP. I am in class 6.
Do you use the internet/ nobles net a lot? Do you like E-mail and the internet? How long have you been using the internet or nobles net?
I am doing research on the invention of the ice cream cone. It was invented in 1904 by Ernest Hamwi at the St. Louis worlds fair. I will have a web page posted soon about the Ice cream cone. If you want to see my picture on the web go to the nobles home page, click on student projects gaolre, and go to CP1 spring.
-Rachel Shorey
Hi
Yes I use Noblesnet a lot. I check it every morning and later in the day if I have a chance. You have to because your teachers send you so much stuff over noblesnet. And yes, I like to use it. I can write and keep in touch with many of my friends by using it. I've been using Noblesnet ever since it got started.
Good luck with your project, it sounds interesting. Kim
Do you know anything about the ice cream cone?
Also, do you mind being quoted on anything about the internet/nobles net? Mr Bergen is making us quote our penpals on computer stuff.
No, I don't mind being quoted. I know that the icecream cone was created when they ran out of dishes or something at a fair and there was a waffle booth set up next to the ice cream booth so the ice cream guy had the waffle guy make waffles to put the ice cream in and that is how ice cream cones were born. I think? Kim
