penicillin
Penicillin Facts by Celcilie ("cc") Wedel

Penicillin was invented in 1928.
It was invented in London, England.
It was invented by Sir Alexander Fleming.
Penicillin acts by killing bacteria and inhibiting their growth.
It does not kill organisms in the resting stage, but only those that are growing and reproducing.
penicillin is efective against a wide range of disease-bearing microrganisms.
Sir Andrew Fleming, the guy who discovered penicillin, was Scottish.
Sir Andrew Fleming first observed the effects of penicillin in bacteria.
Penicillin causes few side effects, but allergic reaction can result from using penicillin.
Even though penicillin was discovered in 1928, it was another ten years before it was concentrated and studied by the british biochemist Ernst Chain.

Thank you so much for volunteering to be my pen pal. My name is Cecilie Wedel, but most people call me Cece. I'm just going to ask you a few questions. What sports do you play? Do you like Nobles? What college are you going to? Do you know anything abut penicilin? Could you please reply as soon as possible. Thank you.
Hi CC. Do you miss California with the cold spring we have had. Have you learned anything about allergies to penicillin? About five years ago, I woke up early one morning and my eyes were swollen shut and my whole face was puffed up like a balloon. I hade suddenly developed an allergy to pennicillin and that reaction brought on lots of other annoying allergies like wheat, shellfish, chocolate. Bummer. I'm sure you can find someone with some good words for penicillin however.
Good luck on your project. Gretchen Fish
I don't play any sports any more, but I used to play field hockey and softball (and I also did aerobics in the winter). I like Nobles a lot and I will miss it next year. I am going to Harvard next year. The only things I know about penicillin is that I can't spell it and it helps people who are sick.
=) Tracy
ps -- sorry this note is so cryptic, I just have SO much work to do.
Since time is now really short and 'no message', here is an anecdote
regarding penicillin.
This story came to me from my mother, age 96 (almost) and still
kicking. She told me that Calvin Coolidge's son got a blister playing
tennis. The blister became infected and the infection killed him. She
believed that was the reason he said, with regard to a second term as
President, "I do not chose to run." Had penicillin been available a
blister, even an infected one, would only require a trip or two to the
doctor. In this case, it could have changed history.
Before the time of antibiotics and inoculations about half the
children did not reach much more than the age of five. Diphtheria and
ordinary infections were deadly. So, when one reads that a famous person
had 10 children , one must then ask now many survived past childhood.
