Summercore Session Four

We use Read, Write and Type at my school.
One of the things that we have done is to look at info from various web pages on the rain forest.

As a reading teacher, I wonder where computers fit into my daily or weekly schedule in terms of meeting with kids. I am also curious as to when kids should start keyboarding skills.

I am a firm believer that technology is a microcosm of the entire school culture. It is not separate from other issues. At our school, we adopted the faculty laptop program in minutes. The reaction from the faculty was an outgrowth of other collegial relationships.

Barbara Simpson
this year, everything is changing ... we are changing from computer classes to teaching computers on an as-needed basis, fitting computers into the time that I have

We have laptops at our school. I believe that each teacher should be a learner. You can always go to the help system for your word processor and print that out. In the classroom, you should always start simple. Connecting a computer to a TV with a scan converter is a great way to get all the kids attention at once.

Deborah Tuck
It is important that we get more teachers involved in listservs, mailing lists on all types of topics. I get 50 messages every day. I read them at 7AM every day. I communicate with over 9000 teachers and librarians around the world. There are listservs for everyone in this room.

Material World is an interesting CD and book
Donna Becker
We use e-mail at my school to find out what teachers are covering in classes so that I can find topics to support the teachers in their curriculum. Our high school students sign up to be computer aides for our lower school. We teach a mini-course as a team of teachers (not-required) called Practical Computing.
Elizabeth Daigle
A lot of the expeditions are developing web sites. One excellent one is http://www.caracol.org/
George Ellis
I took a set of skills from the web and created a curriculum for different grades levels. We are going to laptops at our school. There is an intensive program that our teachers go through. During the second year, they have to demonstrate use; during the third year, they have to mentor another teacher. Occasionally at required staff meetings, we have techno-meetings in which the focus becomes technology and computer lessons.

Jeanne Peters
I have a couple of hints about HyperStudio. The latest version has a teacher resource CD with new graphics. You can now connect to the internet with HyperStudio. HyperStudio Journal and HyperStudio Network are wonderful support materials.

Jeanne Phizacklea
my job as computer coordinator is to focus on the teachers, perhaps more importantly than focusing on the students. I am concerned that our heads of school lead by example. We have moved incredibly fast over the past year. Dealing with teacher training is a complicated issue. It has come to the point that we are thinking about mandatory teacher training. Is it necessary? How do other teachers deal with these issues?

Jessica Corr-Bolander
One web site www.worldvillage
has interesting statistical

We are also dealing at our school with what privileges kids should have in the dorms. The question of computer access being a right or a privilege is interesting.

Kathy Hassinger
I would love to see some printed instructions on basic skills: e-mail, the rule of three, etc.

Laurie Bridel
Working with the computer teacher, we do all of our editing on the computer with their partner on the screen. I make sure that I conference with each student before they start revising with their partners. Because I write in every aspect of my curriculum, the computer is really part of the center of everything I do. I have asked for more computer time per day and now can stay in the computer lab as much as an hour per day in grade four.
Linda Jones-Northrup
I am interested in reading software for young kids who do not yet have reading skills.

Martha Bangs
At BC computer lab, they have printed sheets in the lab on basic tips. An interesting web site that does expositions around the world is www.globallearn.org and you can send them e-mail at webmaster@globallearn.org for more info.

Maryanne Shemo
In terms of acceptable use policy, we have had some kids e-mailing to each other on their own computers. We responded to this situation as if it were an on campus situation. I am very interested in acceptable use
Mike Coleman
We have created a video merge of second graders with a blue background; we then substituted a background of Switzerland and merged the two. This was a big hit at parents night along with other student presentations. We also used grade 7 and 8 students to help the younger students.

Nancy Reynolds
We have 15 minute mini-sessions on Wednesday for short topics. We also have mandatory sessions during faculty meeting times. At times, we break up in groups. This year, we have started becoming an e-mail community. I have been connecting with teachers who I rarely know. E-mail has been very positive for us.
Nathaniel Hawkins
I am interested in the whole issue of how technology gets brought into a school. For me to teach word processing would be almost like teaching chemistry. I need of figure out a way to incorporate technology without undermining my curriculum.
Rebekah Tunkle
One project that we did in my class involved reviewing math web sites. Our students reviewed these web sites and commented on accuracy issues, etc. It is important that kids learn that not everything on the web is useful.
Thomas Kates
We have touched on issues of honesty and privacy. I am concerned about plagiarism, research papers on the web, others getting into personal files. It is as if the university level of kids pirating papers that has now moved down to high school and junior high.
