AN ANNOTATED LIST OF LITERARY WEBSITES

LITERARY RESOURCES ON THE NET:
http://www.english.upenn.edu/~jlynch/Lit/
This index of English and American Literature is the most useful index on the Web. Compiled by a UPenn professor, this site lists links to16 literary categories. Under each category link is a section on general resource sites on genres, movements or time periods; specific author sites; Listservs, and teaching resources including syllabi and literary publications. The general site also includes a link for writers and writing teachers, and a search engine for single-word searches.

MODERN LITERATURE (AMERICAN):
http://humanitas.ucsb.edu
An alphabetical (by author) list of sites about modern American authors. Lists on-line texts, biographical sites, some sites including criticism, and ashort list of Listservs.

MODERN LITERATURE SITE INDEX:
http://www.english.nwu.edu/weblinks/modern2.html
An excellent site on both British and American literature put together at The University of California at Santa Barbara. This site includes extensive sections on general resources on literary genres and movements, indexes of impressive sites for 40-50 American and British authors (including biography, texts, and criticism), a brief list of Listservs, a list of conferences on particular writers, and a very useful section on teaching resources and college course syllabi.

THE BEATS, LITERARY KICKS:
http://www.charm.net/~brooklyn/LitKicks.html
A rather free-flowing (beat) site with links to central Beat figures such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and others. This site also includes interviews with writers, writers’ readings of their works, and other interesting tidbits and reminiscence by the sites creator.

WILLIAM FAULKNER
http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/~egjbp/faulkner/ca.html
A glossary of Faulkner characters, works, place names, etc.

http://www.apsu.edu/~rsh2394/papers.htm
An index to critical essays on Faulkner’s The Unvanquished

http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/~egjbp/faulkner/faulkner.html
A massive Faulkner page with links to works, Faulkner locations, characters, Faulkner societies, critical works. Includes a search engine for information about several Faulkner novels and links to several other sites.

F. SCOTT FITZGERALD:
http://www.csd.scarolina.edu/fitzgerald/index.html
A broad range of topics about Fitzgerald. The critical essays are weak, but there’s some interesting biographical material and lots of random tidbits, including audio of Fitzgerald reciting Shakespeare and Keats.

FLANNERY O'CONNOR:
http://sunset.backbone.olemiss.edu/~jmitchel/flannery.htm
An interesting critical article entitled “Tin Jesus: The Intellectual in Selected Short Fiction of Flannery O’Connor.”

TRANSCENDENTALISTS:
http://www.geocities.com/~freereligion/
A site with links focusing on philosophy and biography of Emerson and Thoreau. Some unspectacular links to sites on Hawthorne, Alcott and other post-Transcendalist writers also appear on this site. There is little here on the literary aspects of Thoreau or Emerson, but some of the background on the elusive beliefs of the Transcendentalists might be useful.

RALPH WALDO EMERSON: http://tolkien.hmco.com/hmco/college/english/heath/syllabuild/iguide/emerson.html
A helpful discussion of techniques for teaching Emerson by getting beyond pure exposition of philosophy. Includes questions for readers as well as a useful bibliography.

HENRY DAVID THOREAU:
http://umsa.umd.edu/thoreau/
A very brief site with primarily biographical links and, more interestingly, a link to several images/photos.

http://umsa.umd.edu/thoreau/walden.html
A brief but interesting background, primarily biographical, to Thoreau’s journey to Walden Pond.

WORLD WAR I POETRY:
http://info.ox.ac.uk/jtap/tutorials/intro/
An actual seminar outline for a course of the poetry of World War I. Includes teaching tips, criticism, a discussion board, and photos and biographies of poets. This is a useful site for teachers of this subject or poetry in general.
