The Use of the Internet
in the
Teaching of the Gospels
To introduce Seventh Grade students to the study of the life of Jesus as told in the
four Gospels, I begin by setting the context for his life within the frameworks of culture,
politics, geography, etc. as it existed in first century Palestine. I also incorporate classical and
contemporary works of art, poetry and music depicting various themes in the Gospels in an attempt to broaden the students appreciation for a variety of religious texts other than the Scripture. The resources provided on the Internet allow the students to gain access to much more of this information than we could find anywhere else within the confines of the classroom.
The following sites seem to be particularly interesting for reviewing some classic
works of art on the topic of the Annunciation:
Lycos--a combination of features from Yahoo and Alta Vista is helpful because it
is a powerful search engine that reviews what it considers to be the Top 5% of
indexed web sites. On Lycos, I found:
This site was very helpful in providing exciting, interactive information and pictures
about Jerusalem and other cities in the Middle East, including information about these
places in ancient as well as contemporary times.
Using the search directory Yahoo, I found the following:

This site (National Gallery of Art) was particularly beautiful in its images as well as in its breadth of sources and ease of use. One feature that I was captivated by was the ability I had to zoom in on and enlarge specific portions of the artwork to examine the details with more accuracy. The students will benefit from this feature as they work to interpret the meaning of the Scriptural event.
