Montessori Options
Montessori Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten is offered as a choice to students at Lotspeich School. Congruent with the philosophy of the founder of Lotspeich School and unique to many Montessori programs, the Pre-Kindergarten is located apart from the Kindergarten. This arrangement helps to meet the developmental needs of both age groups. As a part of The Seven Hills School, the Montessori program is accredited by
ISACS
(Independent School Association of the Central States). It is also fully accredited by AMS
(American Montessori Society).
What is Montessori Education?
Founded in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori, first female physician to graduate from the University of Rome, Montessori is a philosophy with the fundamental idea that a child learns best in a social setting that respects and fosters each individual's unique development. Montessori materials lead the child from concrete operations to abstract thought and contain a built-in control of error for the attainment of mastery. In a carefully planned, sequenced, and aesthetically aware environment, students experience:
- hands-on learning
- large group activities
- small-group and individual instruction
- multi-disciplinary curriculum
What are the Didactic Materials?
The Montessori teacher provides special teaching materials that help the child to see, feel, and discriminate among shapes, textures, and sounds. While some of these materials were designed by Maria Montessori herself, others are made by the teacher.
