There is often confusion around the words INTERNET, NETSCAPE and the WORLD WIDE WEB. The INTERNET is a network of cables around the world that carry messages that result in text and graphics. NETSCAPE is the 'software' that links the texts and graphics to the INTERNET. The texts and graphics are created and shown to the world - or the next computer - on a system called THE WORLD WIDE WEB. Diana Hilligan.
Netscape's forward - back and go buttons are navigational tools that allow you to move easily when using Netscape. If you want to go backwards to the previous web site that you had viewed, use the back button. Now, if you want to move forward again to the web page you had just been looking at, use the forward button. This is analogous to flipping back and forth between two pages in a book. Continuously using the forward button will take you to the last page that you had viewed, but no farther. The go button will show you a list of all of the web pages you had looked at during this particular sitting so that you can easily choose a page to revisit. Dixie J. Knabe
The Netscape Title Bar contains some very helpful features. In the lower right-hand corner you will find two small boxes, with one over-lapping the other. Clicking on this box will allow you to create a mini-page and drag it to a new location. In the upper right-hand corner is a square which resizes the Netscape page. One click returns it to the original size and a second click will return it to its mini-size. The entire page can be moved by clicking and dragging on the title within the title bar. Also, while the web search is occurring, you will notice streaks moving through the "N". Once the search is complete the streaks will discontinue and you can proceed. Doris Parsenios
There are two ways to type in an address on the Web. One way is to Click on Open in the Netscape menu bar. A nice, easy to see box will open, type in your address and click open. Your address will now appear in the Location box near the top of the Netscape home page. The second way is to highlight the Location box and type in your address though this is smaller type and harder to see. In Netscape (as well as most other browsers) it is not necessary to type in the http.// that you see in front of some addresses. Most web address look like this--www.cnn.com. WWW stands for World Wide Web. The next item is unique to that company, organization, institution, etc. Standard endings are com for a comercial business, org for an organization, gov for a governmental unit, or edu for an educational institution. When surfing the net you will encounter blue and purple text, which is also known as hypertext. Hypertext is special text, which when clicked on, leads you to another location. Hypertext can be in colors other than blue and purple, but these two colors seem to be most popular. There is a difference between blue and purple text. Blue text indicates a location which you have not yet visited. Once you have clicked on blue text to visit another location, it becomes purple text. The text will remain purple for 30 days. If you wish, you may change the colors from blue and purple or you may change the 30 day time limit. To do this, go to the Options menu and drag down to General Preferences. Click on the Colors tab and you will see a box on the right with links, followed links and text in it. Click in the box to the left of any of these three and you will be taken to another screen which allows you to change the color. Once you have changed the color, click on okay. To change the expiration time of the followed links, click on the Appearances tab and look for the followed links expire box. Change the number and click on okay. Gay Long
When you are at a web site that you want to remember and revisit, you can go under "BOOKMARK" and choose "add bookmark." That web site or page will now be added to the bookmark menu for your computer, and you will be able to access it more easily. It will remain bookmarked until you delete this command. Choosing "GO" will allow you to see the places you have bookmarked. Copying bookmarks from one computer to another is possible, but the preferred method is to add these links to a common web page that all computers in the school easily access. Jacquie

A Browser is a piece of software which must be used to view the information available to us on the World Wide Web. All software, such as Netscape, America Online or Microsoft Explorer has similar features, so that navigating by one piece of software should have similarities with any other software you may use. Netscape is popular because it is free to schools, teachers and educators. The other equipment needed is the MODEM and the Internet Connection, which is your phone line. Marcia Snyder

There are many wonderful Web Sites where students can find lots of information for any topic. Many times one can tell what type of organization posted the web site by looking at the address. One example would be www.yale.edu. This shows an educational organization. Another would be www.ohio.gov which shows a government organization. Another would be www.ibm.com which shows a commercial organization. However, there are many sites with information not appropriate for students. One example would be www.playboy.com. Guidelines could be developed to help students choose appropriate web sites without limiting their access to information they need. Marilyn Braun
When you want to find a topic go to "Net Search" and click on a search engine. Then type in a subject, name or key word, in a few moments a hit number will appear. This hit number tells you how many different information pieces you can find. If you have a very large hit number try to narrow your topic by listing more specific key words. For example rather than just typing "history", type, "history and elementary and colonial". Different search engines use "and", "or", or a comma between words. Mary
