Regarding Summercore:Summercore is an intensive computer course with practice in word processing, graphics, the net, Hyperstudio, and curriculum application. I appreciate the opportunity.

Thoughts on Immigration:My experience with immigration begins with my Grandparents who came from Germany. Currently I interact with recent immigrants from Mexico in my hometown of Laguna Beach, CA.

Regarding Summercore:It has been very inspiring and liberating. The sound bytes that will remind me to expect to take time in this pursuit is "The computer is not a blender." I've been motivated and challenged to create a hyperstudio project and work on producing a chool web site with our computer coordinator when I return. FANTASTIC!

Regarding Summercore:So much software, so little time!

Thoughts on Immigration:My father-in-law immigrated from Australia in 1939. Essentially, he rescued his entire family by finding them all the next-to-impossible-to-come-by visas and by doing whatever he could to come up with the money to pay for their passage. Without his incredible bravery and persevence, and his desire to come to America, much of his family and mine would not be alive today.

picture RICHARD NEUTRA IS ANOTHER OF THE GERMAN ARCHITECTS WHO CAME TO THE UNITED STATES FLEEING THE NAZIS. HIS MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE IS FOUND IN CALIFORNIA. HE IS ALSO PART OF THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL. HERE IS ONE SITE I FOUND WITH SOME PERSONAL COMMENTS FROM NEUTRA HIMSELF ABOUT HIS LIFE AND ARCHITECTURE.

MIES VAN DER ROHE LEFT NAZI GERMANY IN 1937 TO COME TO THE UNITED STATES, WHERE HE TRANSFORMED AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE WITH THE INTERNATIONAL STYLE. THE SITE HAS FOUR SECTIONS: GENERAL BUILDINGS/PROJECTS, BOOKS, FURNITURE, THEORIES.

Women immigrants at Ellis Island waiting for their medical examination. photograph

"The day of the emigrants' arrival in New York was the nearest earthly likeness to the final day of Judgment, when we have to prove our fitness to enter Heaven"

These words are those of a sympathetic journalist who shared the anxiety-ridden experience awaiting immigrants at the port of entry, usually Ellis Island. Failing the medical test could mean deportation. This photo is from p.269 Women's America by Linda Gerber and Jane Sherwin De Hart. Karen Funkenstein from Summer core'97 "Forrest Gumped" herself into the the first woman on the left of the above photo.

Regarding Summercore:I've learned a great deal at Summercore, but I still have a long way to go.

Thoughts on Immigration:Students from other countries bring new awareness of the Global Village to our school. I really enjoy learning from them.

The Gateway to America was

Ellis Island

. Two web sites that I found that would be interesting links include: 1. The Ellis Island home page offers a look at this site with interesting facts. www.ellisisland.org/

2. The History Channel offers a site that celebrates the history of this island. It includes a chronology, a list of famous immigrants, etc. This site also includes a link to the History Channel Classroom.

Illegal Residents

An estimate of new illegal residents entering the U.S. through San Diego County is based on two facts:

1.Individuals attempting to enter the U.S. withoutdocuments usually make several attempts beforesucceeding or giving up.

2. 65% of the individuals planning to enter the U.S. through San Diego County have previously lived and worked in the U.S.

Regarding Summercore:Summercore is a must for teachers today who lack computer confidence. The pace seems fast and furious, but Lynne and Steve really know what they are doing moving us from one concept to another. I want to come back next year and be on "varsity"!!!!

Thoughts on Immigration:My paternal grandfather came from Brest,France to work at the French Cable Company in Orleans, MA in the early 1900's. This marked the first communication by cable between France and the U.S. Although we are often called the melting pot , I prefer to think of the U.S. as one giant tossed salad, where we all learn to understand and appreciate the uniqueness of each individual.

Regarding Summercore:Summercore has been an outstanding experience for me I've learned a tremendous amount and only hope that I retain some of it and put it to good use. Lynne and Steve are incredibly knolwledgeable and are talented teachers.

Thoughts on Immigration:We have Russian immigrant children that attend our school. They have come to this couontry within the past ten years. The children learn English and become integrated into the culture and community easily.

Summercore thoughts:This program is filled with information. We were able to explore any area in computers that was appropriate for our individual skill level. I enjoyed learning shortcuts for using spreadsheets, database, and word processing. The highlight was making a movie using videoshop and designing pictures using the scanner and photoshop. Steve and Lynn have tremendous patience and and are wonderful teachers.

Regarding Summercore:I came away feeling immensely confident about my word processing skills - one of the principle reasons for my6 attendence. This is the ony computer training I have had in which my goals have been reached and my aspirations satisfied. No one feels underserved at Summercore. In fact, the assistance given to each participant is extraordinary. Steve and Lynne are the perfect conference leaders.
