Summercore at ISB Day One

Valuable Websites

Jane Reid

I can use the website http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/BiogIndex.html in my Year 7 – 9 mathematics classes to give the pupils an insight into where theories, commonly used in the course, come from and how long they have been around. As a complement to the number work necessary, this type of work would be particularly useful at the end of term or after examination stretches. I would envisage the pupils researching on their own, then producing a poster with a picture and some text which would be displayed in the classroom, after they had presented it to the class.

I can use the website http://www.accessone.com/~bbunge/Algebra/Algebra.html in my middle/high school classes ( depending on their ability ) because it is a great tool for repetition of ‘boring’ topics. Students need to do example after example in order to grasp these ideas. If they need to do more than others in the class, then this is a ‘çool’ way for them to do that extra work. I like the way they can get ‘hints’ and can also see the answer easily of necessary.

I can use the French Grammar Central to teach French as a foreign language (fr2 and Fr3) because there are a lot of interactive exercises.

The site Resources for the Study of French Literature, Grammar, Culture, Art, History, Media, Sports seems a good resource for French civilization. It has numerous texts and vocabulary exercises. It could be useful for French 2 and 3 (maybe too difficult for beginners)

Decouvrons le Canada. I could use this site for french 2, as Canada is one of the topic we work on. I could also use it for French 3 since we work on different holidays.

AP French (language & literature/ courses & tests) : this is the course description for the AP literature exam.

Tenth grade English students will find the following site useful for their report on a "choice novel" and its author.

http://dir.yahoo.com/arts/humanities/literature/genres/literary_fiction/authors

They will be able to use this for basic biographical information on the author and also it supplies links to other websites that offer criticism of the particular novel. Students should use this site to get ideas and insights into the novel. However, they must realize that the site is only a springboard into their own in-depth analysis.

This Holocaust sight will help 10th grade English students better understand the unit on Elie Wiesel’s night.

http://www.holocaust-history.org

This sight will be used strictly for historical background on the Holocaust.

Tenth grade English students will find this website useful for the poetry unit.

http://www.learner.org/catalog/literature/vvseries/vvspot/

This site is created from the excellent Voices and Visions video series on 13 American poets. It includes background information on each poet, video clips of the authors reading selections of their poetry, and links to other sites that have criticism and commentary on the poets work.

I can use URL: http://www.med.virginia.edu/~kh2h/7king.html because the fairy tale games would be good to link in with our work on fairy tales and would serve to enhance the children’s interest in this topic. As the children will be going on to write their own stories, maybe they will get ideas from this.

I can use http://www.EnchantedLearning.com/subjects/dinosaurs/index.html in connection with my dinosaur project because the children can read simple definitions of each dinosaur and print out their own pictures of dinosaurs. They can learn about common properties of dinosaurs eg defence mechanisms, feeding habits etc. After our museum visit, during which they will see real fossilized examples of dinosaur bones, they can refer to their notes and use this web site to find out more information about these dinosaurs. Dino News is great as a tells of the latest finds of dino skeletons. Most first graders would find this difficult to use but it would be good for me to adapt to show the chronology of discovery.

Teaching Computers To Adults Who Are Relative Newbies:

Many parents come to my classes to not only increase their knowledge level for themselves, but also for their children (to help and to guide them.)

Safety on the Net

The following sites would help parents feel more comfortable about knowing what the risks are and in setting internet guidelines.

http://www.safekids.com/contract.htm

http://www.teachingcompany.com/Safety/index.htm This site has very clear, usable text that can be printed out and pasted in the home computer area, as well as contracts to make children understand the seriousness with which parents view the risks.

Search Engines for Kids

The following search engines would be helpful to allow children to find sites for themselves:

http://www.awesomelibrary.org/

http://www.ajkids.com/

http://www.yahooligans.com/

http://www.about.com/

Fun Sites for Newbies

I can use http://www.speechpaths.com/ to obtain professional information on what’s new in the field, books available, forums and magazines.

I can use the website http://www.mankato.msus.edu/dept/comdis/kuster2/sldisorders.html in the special education class to obtain information on different disorders and syndromes

I can use http://www.fema.gov/kids/icons.htm for a theme project on safety because it provides games and stories on how to reduce risk as well as giving safety rules.

I can use http://www.speechmag.com/archives/needs.html to teach and possibly help evaluate FH because it discusses issues related the visually impaired individuals.

Annie Bruce

I can use the web site http://www.teachnet.com/lesson/math/placevalfun.html when I teach my second graders Place Value. There are several useful ideas for activities to supplement my Maths Programme.

On the same page as the place value ideas there are lots of fun ideas for estimating in maths.

I suspect that if I were to investigate this web site further I would also find some good resources for other things we study in second grade.

It has taken a long time to find this site. Now I’ve found it I am reluctant to leave it. This is a slightly different part of the web site, and it gives a huge list of interesting ways to use spelling words. I could type out each of these ideas on a piece of paper, mount it and laminate it, then have a different activitiy or set of activities in my spelling/ABC centre in September for the start of the second grade year.

This website looks promising. It is 4.25. on Day One so I’ll just copy it here. It is http://owl.english.purdue.edu/Files/13.html and it has come out blue which is good. I’ll use it for helping the second graders with their writing.

This is useful for information for testing information. http://www.utas.edu.au/docs/student_services/alda/options/info/id.htm

I can use the website http://www.teachingcompany.com/CurrLinks in my 10th, 11th and 12 th grade classes because many of these authors are part of our curriculum, and the library has limited resources. I can also use this website to recommend to the teacher participants of IB workshops that I teach annually, many of whole are working in far-flung areas of the world with limited resources. Quality secondary sources are especially useful. The AP site is valuable because we do IB and AP. College admissions section is helpful for all teachers at upper high school level.
