My Guys by Harriette Maxcey

It was the second week of December and she was sitting in the Montreal crew lounge waiting for a decision on the southbound porton of her round trip , ending her work week. She was silently saying Hail Marys' and Our Fathers' for the trip to be on and not canceled due to the weather. Although it was a nasty night with hail and ice forming on the silver birds sitting on the taxiways Ann wanted desparately to go home to her two men! Her pilot husband Michael Callahan and their litle bundle of joy, Michael Junior who was going on two and the heart and soul of their lives, and their love!

"Okay, crew let's go and check her out." The crew captain said. He stood and the others followed. Walking down the corridor ramp they could hear the hail on the steel roof. "Pretty nasty night," the co-pilot said as he entered the cockpit and took the right hand seat. Leaving the left-hand seat for Captain Fredette. The engineer, Mack McKinnon was the third male in the crew. Marylyn Siebert was working the flight with Ann. It was a good crew and they all worked well together. The flight was loaded and the Captain took her down the runway, stopping for further instructions from the Air Traffic Control people. Without waiting for any unnecessary chatter. the silver bird lifted off the ground and began climbing into the dark and dismal atmosphere. Ann breathed a sigh of relief, unbuckled her seat belt stood up, smoothed down her skirt and began preparations for the snacks that would be given out to the passengers along with the beverages of choice.

Michael Callahan's flight had arrived in Laguardia an hour ago right on time. He went up to the counter and asked if the Montreal inbound was on tme. The clerk looked at his board then picked up the phone and dialed. Turning back to mike he answered "It just left Montreal, It should be an hour late, but the weather is getting better coming down, they may pick up some of the time." Mike began debating with himself as to stay there and just wait or go and pick up the baby and come back for Ann. That seemed like the thing to do, pick up Michael and both come back and get Ann!

The rain was now pelting on the windshield and with the temperture dropping it booded a good old-fashined snow storm! Thank goodness both he and Ann were off until next Thursday, thought Mike. They may be able to do some Christmas shopping earlier than the day before Christmas as was their usual routine. And this year they would take Michael Jr. to see Santa. Mike was looking forward to that. Mike Jr. had really been too young last year. Michael stopped in front of the baby sitter's house; shut off the engine and ran up the steps. He was truly anxious to see his son again even though he had said goodby only this morning! The little guy had really changed their lives in all respects! They didn't want to be away from him for even the very least amount of time! He and Ann had been discussing moving to the suburbs or even another state that would have an easy proximatey to the airport. Ann was not adverse to staying home and being den mother to the little friends of their child! This in itself was something that Michael hadn't counted on because he knew of her love of flying, this point in itself had almost come between them marrying and she only said yes because Mike had agreed that he had no objections to her flying! If truth be known, he did have strenuous objections. Not that he didn't trust her but only when being part of a flight crew mean't not being where you wanted to be when you wanted to be there! How often were their dates postponed due to uncooperating weather conditions? Yes, they were both ready for the white picket fences and the flower gardens, and the dog and cat they both wanted to grow up with their children!

Young Michael gurgled and laughed when his father picked him up and held him up in the air. This form of play was always great fun! "Let's get on the road again . We have to pick up mommie." "Mommie, Mommie." little mike parroted."Pick up mommie!" They were on their way again, back to LaGuardia. The weather hadn't changed and the windshield was becoming frosty.

The traffic had picked up but they were traveling slowly due to the weather. Mike had strapped the baby into his car seat and buckled his own seat belt securely. Suddenly two large glares were in front of him! Another car coming right on in the wrong lane! Michael tried to move over but could not because of the massive amount of traffic!

It was all over in seconds!

One adult male and one infant male died instantly after colliding with an adult male proceeding in the wrong direction! The ADULT MALE would be cited with DW as well as manslaughter!
